A tiling upstand is a short vertical extension to the side of the tray that, during installation allows the wall tiles or wall covering to conceal the top edge of the tray.
The riser leg, or number of legs are fitted to the underside, which allows the installer to adjust and correctly level the tray by rotating the legs on a screw thread.
When levelling a tray the spirit level must be placed on the flat raised area around the recessed tray bed. The recessed tray bed slopes towards the 'waste', that is, the outlet pipe.
The degree with which the tray needs to be level depends upon the type of enclosure to be fitted, the more level the tray, the easier it will be to fit the enclosure.
A fully framed enclosure is more tolerant of a tray that is not entirely level.
The maximum 'out of level tolerance', for say a 900 square tray fitted with a fully framed enclosure is around 4mm.
For a part framed enclosure the maximum 'out of level tolerance', for say a 900 square tray, is less at a maximum of 2.5mm.
With a good quality spirit level this accuracy is easy to achieve.
The installation and adjustment of an enclosure will be much easier if the tray is level.
There are two main types of 'waste traps', top access and bottom access.
A top access waste allows the fitting to be serviced, that is, cleaned out from above, so that access to the underside of the shower tray is not needed.
A bottom access waste is similar to the type used in hand basins, where there is a 'cup' that can be unscrewed from below to clean out any debris that has become trapped.
The 'acrylic' can be repaired by using a purpose designed repair kit, this is available with full instructions from Anglo Adhesives of Leicester and they can be contacted on 01664 480866.
The heavy trays are made from a resin and stone mixture, which provided a stable and 'non flexing' tray.
In addition, there are trays made from pressed steel, then glazed, stainless steel, fibreglass, to name but a few.
The heaviest of all are manufactured from fireclay, the same type of material that is used to manufacture the 'Belfast' sinks.
The 'gelcoat' can be repaired by using a purpose designed repair kit, available from Kohler Mira Customer Services, in Cheltenham. This contains gloves, fine emery paper, instructions and the repair solutions needed.
