Choosing a shower can be a tricky business, so to avoid confusion, follow the Mira guide to selecting the right shower for you.
Roger Crabb, marketing manager for Mira says; “When you’re thinking about your new shower, you’ll need to consider a number of factors. What’s the style of your home - modern or traditional? How many people are likely to use the shower, and what age are they? What type of water system do you have?
“At Mira we can help you to answer all these questions, and advise you on making the right decision about your shower. The trick to choosing a shower is all about finding the right product for your particular situation. So to avoid disappointment, try not to leaf through brochures and choose the most attractive shower, as it might not be suitable for your home.
“Do your homework first, then choose an appropriate model. Remember, at the very least you will need to know the type of hot water system you have and the space you have available.”
Find out what sort of hot water supply you have, as this can often affect your choice of shower.
Low pressure, gravity-fed: the most common in UK homes, with gravity fed hot & cold water. The hot water is normally stored in a tank in the airing cupboard and the cold water is normally stored in the loft.
High pressure: Becoming more popular, can be from a combination boiler or gas water heater, which heats the water as you use it.
High pressure unvented: where your hot water is stored under pressure in a large cylinder in the airing cupboard or garage.
Plan where your shower is to be located carefully. Do you have hot and cold water supplies in that area? Is there adequate drainage?
Remember, showers can be squeezed into all sorts of spaces. With the growth of ensuite bathrooms and downstairs cloakrooms, many properties now have more than one shower. In fact, according to the Mira Shower Report, 86% of all new properties have ensuite bathrooms.
These smaller bathrooms, whether upstairs or downstairs, tend to have showers instead of baths and 70% of them include a shower enclosure. Daryl enclosures & trays form a natural extension to the range of showers, bringing elegance and refreshing luxury to every bathroom or shower room.
Mixer: Take hot water from both the hot and cold water supplies and mix them to accurately reach the desired temperature Ideal for homes with a plentiful supply of hot water
Electric: Only take water from the mains cold water supply. When you have a shower, you don’t use any stored hot water – so electric showers are ideal for families and households where there is a limited supply of hot water
Power: Power showers take water from both the hot and low pressure stored cold water supplies. They mix the hot and cold to reach the desired temperature and then boost the flow of water from the shower using an integral pump to provide a more forceful spray. You should not use a power shower with a high-pressure water system
What is the ideal hot water system for a good shower?
- The general rule is that the better the water pressure the better the shower and the greater choice of shower fitting (like those with a choice of spray patterns or drench heads)
- If the existing water system is gravity fed (that is the cylinder is fed from a large tank above; usually in the loft) there is still a way to ensure a good shower. Fit a pump to boost the water pressure. You will need to ask your plumber for the type you need and where it should be fitted.
